Text Qr Code

You print 500 flyers, and a week later you notice the website address on them has a typo. A QR code generator prevents that kind of mistake: you paste the link once, test it, and everyone who scans lands in the right place. The same idea works for plain text, WiFi passwords, contact details, WhatsApp chats, PDFs, menus and more.

This guide explains how to create a custom QR code for each of these uses, what to enter for each type, and how to print it so it scans. You can follow along with the free QRSnap QR code generator. It has no sign-up and adds no watermark.

How a QR code works

A QR code is just a pattern that stores text. When a phone camera scans it, the phone reads that text and decides what to do: open a link, offer to join a WiFi network, or save a contact. The code does not hold your website or your PDF itself. It holds the address or data that points to it. That one idea explains most of the tips below.

How to create a QR code in 5 steps

  1. Open the QRSnap generator. The Link / Text tab is selected by default.
  2. Paste your link or type your text. For WiFi and contact cards, switch to the WiFi or Business Card tab.
  3. Choose your colors. Add a logo or a frame if you want one.
  4. Pick a size (720px up to 4K) and a format: PNG for screens, SVG or EPS for print.
  5. Download the code and scan it with your own phone before you share or print it.

QRSnap builds the code in your browser, and the code is static, meaning it stores your link or text directly. It does not expire, and the code does not need an account.

Which QR code do you need?

Everything below uses the same generator. Some types have a dedicated tab. For the rest, you paste a link or special text into the Link / Text tab.

I want to share... What to enter in QRSnap
A website, store or online formThe full link (with https://) in Link / Text
Plain textYour text in Link / Text
WiFi accessNetwork name, password and security in the WiFi tab
My contact detailsName, phone, email in the Business Card tab
A WhatsApp chatA wa.me link in Link / Text
Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok, TelegramYour profile or channel link in Link / Text
A PDF, image, video or audio fileThe public link to the file, after you host it online
An app downloadThe Google Play or App Store page link
A location or eventA Google Maps share link, or the event or RSVP page link
A paymentThe payment link from your provider

How to make a QR code for a website, online store or form

This is the simplest and most common type. Copy the full address from your browser, including https://, and paste it into the generator. For a campaign, link to the exact page you want people to see (a product, an offer or a form), not just your home page.

Text QR code

Type or paste any text into the Link / Text tab and the code stores it. When someone scans it, their phone shows the text. It is useful for short notes, serial numbers, instructions or a message printed on a card. Keep it short: more text makes the code denser and harder to scan at small sizes.

How to make a WiFi QR code

Guests scan the code, the phone shows a "join network" prompt, and nobody types a password. Open the WiFi QR code tab and enter your network name exactly as it appears, the password exactly as typed (case matters), and the security type. WPA/WPA2 is the default for most routers. For a longer walkthrough, see our guide to making a WiFi QR code. If you change the WiFi password, the old code stops working, so generate a new one.

QR code for a business card (contact details)

The Business Card tab turns your name, phone, email, company and website into a code that offers to save you as a contact. It fits on the back of a printed card, an email signature or a presentation slide. Because the details are baked into the printed code, a new job title or phone number means a new code.

WhatsApp QR code

A WhatsApp QR code opens a chat with your number. Build the link as https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, using digits only (no plus sign, spaces, dashes, brackets or leading zero). For example, a UK number written +44 7700 900123 becomes https://wa.me/447700900123. You can add a first message with ?text= and the message encoded (spaces become %20). Paste the finished link into the Link / Text tab.

Don't print the personal QR code from inside the WhatsApp app for this job. Resetting that code later makes every printed copy stop working.

Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Telegram QR codes

Open your profile or channel in the app or browser, copy its link, and paste it into the generator. If you are on more than one platform, point one code to a single link-in-bio page instead of making five. You can find more ideas on our social profile QR code page.

How to make a QR code for a PDF, image, video or audio file

QRSnap does not upload or host files. The code needs a public link to the file, so host it first: on your own website, or on a service like Google Drive or Dropbox. If you use a cloud service, set sharing so that anyone with the link can view the file. A private file will scan fine but won't open for strangers. The same applies to a photo gallery, a video or an audio clip: link to the page that plays them.

Two practical tips: compress large images or PDFs so they load quickly on mobile data, and don't move or rename the file later, because a changed link breaks the printed code.

App download QR code

Paste the link to your app's page on Google Play or the Apple App Store. Check what happens when you scan it on both an Android and an iPhone. If you want a single code for both stores, link to a small web page of your own that detects the phone or lists both buttons.

Location (Google Maps), event and RSVP QR codes

For a location, open the place in Google Maps, use Share, and paste the copied link. For an event, link to the event page or to your RSVP form. A map code on a shop window or invitation saves visitors from typing an address, and an RSVP code gets replies from people who would otherwise forget.

Restaurant menu, review and product packaging QR codes

  • Menu: link to your online menu page or hosted PDF menu. Update the page, not the printed code.
  • Reviews: use the direct review link your business profile gives you, so customers land on the review box.
  • Packaging: link to a page with instructions, warranty or reorder details, and keep that page live as long as the product is sold.

Payment QR codes

A QR code only stores the payment link. It does not move money. Generate it from your payment provider's own page (PayPal, your bank or another processor), never from a link someone else sent you. Our payment link QR code guide covers where these codes fit and what to check first.

Email, phone number and SMS QR codes

These use special text formats that phones recognize. Paste them into the Link / Text tab:

  • Email: mailto:hello@example.com
  • Phone call: tel:+441234567890
  • Text message: sms:+441234567890

How phones handle these formats can differ between Android and iPhone, especially for a pre-written SMS, so scan the finished code on both before printing.

Customize your QR code: colors, logo, frame and shape

You can change the code color and background, add your logo in the center, choose a frame with your own call-to-action text, and pick shapes for the corner eyes and center. Three rules keep a styled code scannable:

  • Keep strong contrast. A dark code on a light background works best. Don't invert the colors.
  • Keep the logo small and use High error correction, which the generator recommends when a logo is added.
  • Choose a clear frame text, such as "Scan to chat" or "Scan for the menu", so people know what they will get.

Make your QR code printable

  • Pick the right file: PNG for screens and documents, SVG or EPS when a printer needs to scale it.
  • Choose a high resolution for large prints. Bigger sizes print sharper.
  • Leave a blank margin around the code. Don't let text or images touch it.
  • Print it big enough for the distance people will scan from. Posters need much larger codes than a business card.
  • Test the printed copy, not just the screen version, on at least two phones.

Static vs dynamic QR codes

A static code stores your link or text inside the pattern. A dynamic code stores a short link that redirects to your real destination, which lets a paid service change the destination later and count scans. QRSnap's codes are static. They are free, they don't expire and nothing depends on a subscription, but you can't edit the destination or see scan counts after printing. If you might change the destination, point the code to a page you control and update that page.

Common QR code mistakes

  • Not testing the code before printing.
  • Linking to a private file or a page that needs a login.
  • Using low contrast, or placing the code on a busy image.
  • Making the code too small, or cramming in too much text.
  • Forgetting the https:// in a website link.
  • Putting a huge logo over the code.
  • Sending people to a page that is not mobile-friendly.
  • Printing a code for a link you plan to change.

Frequently asked questions

Is the QR code generator really free?

Yes. You can create and download codes with no sign-up and no watermark.

Do QR codes expire?

Not static ones. A code made with QRSnap keeps working as long as the link or data inside it is still valid.

Can I add my logo?

Yes. Upload your logo in the generator, keep it small and use High error correction.

Can I track how many people scan my code?

Not with a static code from QRSnap. If you need scan numbers, put a trackable link behind the code and track that link.

Can I make a QR code for a PDF or an image?

Yes, but QRSnap needs a public link to the file. Host it on your site or cloud storage, set it to be viewable by anyone with the link, and paste that link.

Can I change the destination after printing?

No. A static code can't be edited. Create a new code, or make the code point to a page you can update.

What file format should I download?

PNG for screens, SVG or EPS for print jobs that need to scale up.

How do I scan a QR code?

Open your phone's camera, point it at the code and tap the link or prompt that appears.

Is a barcode the same as a QR code?

No. A barcode is a different format used mainly for product numbers. QRSnap has a separate barcode generator tab for that.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do these QR codes expire?

No. Codes generated here are static. The data is encoded directly into the pattern, so it never expires and works offline once scanned.

Will adding a logo stop it from scanning?

Not if you keep the logo small and use High error correction (the default when a logo is added). This lets the code stay readable even with part of it covered.

Can I use this for a business or client project?

Yes. Codes generated here are free to use for personal and commercial purposes, with no attribution required.
